St John 2021

Covid 19 and all! Showing the son and daughter in law the island for first time.

We have not traveled since we were last stuck on a cruise for 8 extra days last March. Covid 19 had us almost canceling. The numbers were down for St John and everyone coming to the island needed a neg Covid test in the last 5 days. We had just experienced a dramatic change in my daughter's wedding from 200-25 people due to restrictions on Dec 31. We had this family trip planned for a year. We decided we were coming.

First was the testing. We went to CVS for a rapid test 5 days prior to leaving. We got our results in 30 min and then just had to download to Virgin Island Portal. My daughter in law and son's test came back neg too. We had to wait for the daughter and son in law till the next day for their test. Yea all 6 of us will be going.

We got picked up by son and daughter-in-law and had to use the truck to get all our suitcases and coolers in. We ate in Chesterton and stayed park sleep and fly at Sheraton Suites close to O hare airport. We got up at 0420 for 0500 shuttle to the airport. There were a lot of people waiting for the small shuttle and I went to the desk and he said he was getting an extra van to hold everyone. When we got to the airport there were no lines. 3 of our bags got searched. I take food since we are going for 21 days and pancake mix always triggers a search. Nothing was open except Mac Donal's so got coffee and a breakfast sandwich and took a sub-way sandwich for the plane. We took United and had an uneventful flight. the flight had about 40 people on it. We arrived about a half-hour early.

Kate really gets into the Zombie mode on the plane,

I love when you step off the plane and get hit by the warm air. You know you have arrived on the island. No shot of rum due to covid but we received a mask and wipes.Yippe the times of epidemic

We had a private driver Ali take us to Crown Bay Ferry for the 3:30 crossing. We had time to stop for a quick pain killer and a bloody Mary and delicious Calamari at Tickles by the ferry.

We got off the ferry and Courtesy was waiting for us to take us to pick up Jeeps. We had rented two 4 door jeeps for the 6 of us, Kate wanted the bright blue one and we took the black one. Next stop store for rum, juice eggs, cream, vegetables and water. Our villa does not drink the water so we ended up going through 18 gallons of water for 8 days for the 6 of us.

Keith Kate and I headed over to Corral Bay to meet greeter Pauline to take us to Villa Allure. Four switchbacks up and we were at home for the 8 days

Villa Allure

The power was out and she showed us around the best she could because it was getting dark. My husband met us with the other 2 children that had a later flight. We decided to go down and eat at Skinny's cuz they had lights. It was packed! I guess everyone had the same idea. We could see power came back on and decided to go up and unpack and come back at 800. That was a good decision because the restaurant had emptied out.

Villa Allure has 5 bedrooms, And two kitchen areas with the biggest outside area we have had. It was perfect for our family. Lots of sitting areas and places for privacy.

Jan 10th Sunny/clouds

Ate all breakfast in. Had smoked bacon, egg mc muffins. I promised my new son in law Steven that he would get to swim with turtles. We got to Francis at 0915 and was the third jeep there. We set up in some shade on the far right. We were sitting there and up popped the turtle heads and he was in the water to go explore. He was one happy fella.

Kids snorkeled to far right I snorkeled to left tried to find octopus but did not see it. We left the beach at about 2:30 to go to

Annaberg to see the ruins.

We stopped at Mary's Creek and the tide was low walked out and enjoyed the view.

We stopped at an overlook of Coral Bay

Came back and had cocktails, shrimp, cheese, smoked cheese for appetizers.

Supper was made by Keith and Kate, Fresh salmon, peas, and corn.

Monday 11th,

Electric was off but Keith was able to make breakfast on a gas stove. Potatoes and sausage gravy, fresh fruit and muffins for breakfast.

The wind was up so headed to Salt Pond, I had my other knee replaced in Sept. I used trekking poles and was very slow but made it!

The kids went to Drunk Bay we left about 330 and stopped and got 12-gallon water.

Tonight we had reservations for Rhumb Lines for 0600. We had Mike as our waiter. I had fish tacos, Jim and Kate and Steven had Pad Thai, Keith had seared Tuna. All enjoyed their meals.

Tonight the kids had reservations in Cruz bay. The honeymooners ate at the Terrace and Keith and Kate ate at Longboards. They don't take reservations so they put their name in and walked around.

Casandra and Steven had reservations at the Terrace

Dad and I stayed back at the villa and ate leftovers and went to bed early! These kids are wearing us out.

Thursday the 14th.

Walked into Waterlemon. Went to snorkel the cay. The waters seemed calm, My husband and I have snorkeled the cay about 10 times and only do it if it looks calm. We snorkeled out and got stuck in an undercurrent or riptide. I wanted to turn back I could see panic set in my husbands face. He wears a life vest but could not get it to blow up. I was holding him up under arms and trying to calm him. Got my attention of my son and he swallowed a bunch of water trying to get to us. My daughter ask if we if we were ok using an old sking signal we used. I shook my head no she came with my son in law, he drug my husband to the rocks on cay. We tried to climb up and the water was crashing in on us. All 6 of us made it up on rocks on cay. We sat and rested and collected ourselves and my daughter in law started climbing to find us a way out. We climbed over the cay and were able to get in the calm water on another side.

So thankful the kids were with us. I will never snorkel this again. The three mooring balls are good enough for me. When we got back to shore we told the family of 4 about the undercurrent. Two of them were lifesavers. Later in the week at Trunk bay, we saw them and they thanked us and said they got stuck in the undercurrent and turned back,

Sitting at Mary's Creek and very thankful for everyone's quick thinking

Stopped at Maho and found a shady spot to right.

Came home and Keith made Lime in Coconuts as we all reflected on our scary day.

We had hamburger sliders in the fancy dining room the only night we used this beautiful room.

We played catchphrase and of course, the girls beat the guys!

St John 2020

Sharing 10 days with friends Michele and Doug and a week by our selves

We went to Chicago on Jan 7th. Stayed at our usual Best Western in Des Plains. Jim asked check-in girl for recommendations and she said the Boston Fresh Food Market. Walkable from the hotel. We drove and was pleasantly surprised. They sell all fresh unfrozen fish. We had a couple of delicious sandwiches. The next time we will share a freshly grilled fish meal. It comes with vegetables, rice, and baked apples.

Up at 4 am and took a shuttle van to the airport. We had pre-check but my shoe caused alarm and of course total knee requires a pat-down. Flew to Charlotte and ate lunch. Bought salad and sandwich to eat on the plane. Arrived at 430 and luggage took awhile a big spirit airline had just landed.

Left at 510 and was able to catch the Crown ferry at 530. It is less than 10 minutes from the airport. Do ask what charge is we got gouged on the price but was in a hurry so did not bicker. I love this new addition. It felt so good to have the warm wind in our faces. A bird entertained us the whole ride over.

We arrived and Curtsey was there to pick us up along with a big group. We got our 4 door jeep and was off for groceries. We got the basics, creamer, milk, eggs, rum, beer, pop, water, We each brought a cooler with meat, lunch meat, cheeses, bacon, sausages, potatoes, chips and snacks, shrimp, We called Doug and Michele who was already at Villa Lunazul and told her our arrival time. We arrived at 0730. She had cooked us a lovely meal of chicken cordon Blue and rice. Doug and Michele live in Slinger WI and arrived a couple of hours earlier than us and got a ride to the villa. They do not want to drive on the island

Villa Lunazul is my all-time favorite Villa when renting with another couple.

We have stayed here 3 times, Dorthy and Edward are new owners and live down below in the villa down the hill. Always available for any questions or anything we needed. Nonatrusive would not even know they are there. We had a beach chair break and it was immediately changed out and Edward fixed it. A shutter was loose in the high winds and he fixed it the same day. Everything you need for the villa is there. Dorthy is a wealth of information and gave us several tips even though we have been here many times. The view is priceless from here. I find I sleep less. Always up by 6 to watch sunrise peeking over the horizon. This is the first time we experienced high winds and howling at night in Jan. I can not EVEN imagine what it was like during the hurricanes of 2017.

First Day Thursday, Jan 9th. Doug picked Maho. We arrived early and was able to get a place in the shade.

This beach has changed a lot since the new area with a bar and food has opened up. It definitely makes the beach busier. We did walk down and get a drink and they were very good at $8 average. There is a place to rent boards. In my opinion, it was a tastefully done area.

I prefer quieter areas but can see why some people like the addition. We snorkeled and you can always see turtles here. Maho is a beautiful sandy beach easy walkout for children. Great calm beach to learn to snorkel. Supper tonight was a pork loin, Cauliflower and smashed little potatoes in the oven. The first game of dominoes.

Friday Jan 10th

Frances for the day. It was pouring rain when I ran upstairs to start the coffee. It soon stopped. We stayed at Frances whole day had a 2o minute soaker rain. then it cleared out and we stayed until 330 and the No seeums carried us out. Steak, potatoes in foil and corn.

Full Moon Tonight

Saturday, Jan 11th
Went to Salt pond had been very windy during the night. Sunny, Saturday tends to be turn around day so not many people on the beach. We were able to find some shade.

Jim and I walked the short 10-minute walk to Drunk Bay. It is not good for swimming. The coastline here is wild and rugged. Good for beachcombing. it is open sea that rolls all the way from Africa. Many times you can find unique rock formations.

Miss Lucy's for late lunch

Nothing like grouper Ruban sandwich The lime in coconut drinks are awesome here.

Since we had late lunch just had shrimp and crackers with fig jelly and cheese

Sunday, Jan 12th

Today was a Trunk Bay beach day from 9-3. We sat up in the shade and enjoyed the beach and water. We walked the beach in the morning

We had Michele's lasagna and a salad. I must admit we are eating well on the islands.

Sunday is Packer Sunday

Packers played the Seahawks Packers WIN 28 Seatle 23 Packers play San Francisco for Divisional Playoffs,

Monday, Jan 13

Very high winds during the night. We decided to go to Lameshur
c1c51270-41dc-11ea-86f7-43564dd0be13.JPGIMG_5248.JPGIMG_5251.JPGIMG_5252.JPGIMG_5254.JPGIMG_5257.JPG The roads were the worse we have ever seen. Definitely need a jeep to get here.

We stopped for a drink at Aqua Bistro

Had painkiller and lime and coconut.

Tuesday Jan 14

The boys and Michele picked Frances again to look for sea glass. One of my favorite beaches. It was cloudy and we had a downpour that lasted for about 20 minutes. The rain went away and we had a great day until the noseeums ran us away.

Tuesday means Chicken-fried Chicken with pecan honey sauce at Carribean Oasis. It has become so popular we called our order to be picked up at 600. We all went down and had a drink.

Bingo was ready to start so Jim and Michele bought cards. We enjoyed talking to the man Henry next to us. He invited us up to his house tomorrow. We decided to eat there. a quick pop up rain shower came and went. We left we noticed Henry and Betty were leaving ahead of us. We followed them up and decided to stop. They are such a cute couple he showed us his 2 bedroom place that he rents out when they are not here. They stay a couple of months, they are Italian and he told us of great Balsamic Vinegar that Starfish Market has that can refill. We later would stop and get some to bring home.

Wednesday Jan15th

Mostly sunny with a couple rain burst. We went to Hawknest from 10-3

We went to eat at Rumblines for appy and 1/2 off drinks at 5 0'clock at the bar. We had great service and food came out fast compared to last year's slow service. We had egg rolls, french fries, and spicy noodles and shrimp. I had mango Margaretia I liked.

Thursday Jan 16th,

We went to Cinnamon Bay. 930-300,IMG_5324.JPG5113ff50-41e6-11ea-bbf7-cd9ba1bb30b1.JPGIMG_5340.JPGIMG_5349.JPGIMG_5351.JPGIMG_5352.JPGIMG_5345.JPGIMG_5339.JPGIMG_5355.JPGIMG_5341.JPGIMG_5338.JPG

They have paved the road that goes by Catherineberg Ruins. I have driven by but never stopped to check them out. Since we were so close we stopped and enjoyed them.

Friday, Jan 17th

We went to Maho.

I had a good snorkel and saw 7 turtles. Came in at 130 and 4 people had sat up camp right behind us in our shade., Mind you we get to each beach early to find shade. We did not say anything gave them a hard look like REALLY and packed up. Went to

Saturday we packed up. Edward and Dorthy came up to talk. We moved our stuff to Jane and Larry at Angel Roost

and took Michele and Doug to catch the 11 Crown Ferry.

We had so much fun with our friends. Not everyone you meet can you travel with. We might only see each other once a year but until next time my friends take care.

We went to Haulover South and snorkeled and relaxed.

IMG_5561.JPGIMG_5560.JPGIMG_5574.JPGIMG_5562.JPG First day we did not pack a lunch so stopped at Skinny's and shared a burger and chips and had my favorite drink Mango Painkiller. We went back to settle in and unpack.

Sunday, Jan 19th

We drove out to Pelican Rock. Parked and donated $5 It was calm and we snorkeled for 3 hours resting on shore for a while. Saw a spotted ray.

We had shrimp for supper. Packers played 49 ers It was not the outcome we wanted.

St John 2019

Three glorious weeks

Jim retired on Wednesday this year after 39 and a half years at AEP working as an electrical engineer. We went to Chicago for Park, Sleep and Fly. We stayed at Best Western in Des Plaines. We went to a Guy Feri place of diners and drive in called paradise pup. It is a small place that serves the best burgers and fries and Malts yes I said Malt. you do not hear that much anymore.

Sat Jan 5th up early and left the hotel at 615. We went to United Club room to wait and have a light breakfast. We were to meet up at the airport with Michele and Doug friends we had met in 2009 on a cruise. This is before Michele was destined to be a travel agent. She is awesome and always goes above and beyond to provide the best service possible. Hopefully this trip she can get some much-needed downtime. We had a 0850 flight. It takes about 5 hours to get to St John.

First glimpse of land

I went to the bathroom to change clothes and our luggage came out. We were hoping to catch the 5 pm ferry. Michele had contacted Ali

one of the drivers she has used before to pick us up on a private van. We were excited and loaded up and were off. about 15 min into the ride my phone rings and says, Charlotte Amalie. I do not know anybody there but answered and he said he had one of our luggage back at the airport. I said nope we got them all. He said, lady, I am telling you I am calling you from the number on your bag. We looked in the back and sure enough, I had left one on the sidewalk. So much for catching the ferry, we had to turn around and go back to the airport to get it. We arrived at Redhook just as the ferry was pulling away. Oh, well we are on island time. Jim bought us Painkillers, Bushwackers, and Doug a beer. It helped to ease the pain. It tasted so good and before we knew it we were loading the ferry.

Courtesy met us at the dock and we were off to get our 4 door Jeep. We stopped at the dolphin market for necessities like rum beer, eggs, water, and bread. We called Stan owner of Lunazul and said we were on our way. It was dark and we were unsure which road. It had been three years since we had stayed there and everything looked different after hurricanes. Our phones would not work so we gave it a try on our own. thought we were on right rode then decided it was not. Jim backed out of this crazy driveway and we went back down. Finally got phone reception and got a hold of Stan and he met us and took us back up. We were on the right road after all. It felt so good to be returning to Lunazul. They had lost a couple windows and a door in Hurricanes. Everything looked great and some of the palms were growing back nicely. We put our food away and decided to eat in and made some sandwiches and turned in 1030 island time. So good to be back on the island.

Sunday, Jan 6th

Up at 530 made coffee and watched island start to come alive. My absolute favorite time of day. Doug made sausage and Michele made dipping eggs

IMG_1577.JPGIMG_1582.JPG .IMG_1575.JPGIMG_1581.JPGIMG_1583.JPGIMG_1584.JPG

We picked Frances as the first beach and sat up camp. First on the beach at 1000.

We came back and had drinks and appetizers. We had chicken kiev, rice, and salad. We listened to music and went to be about 0830.

Today is Doug's birthday. We had blueberry pancakes and sausage.

We went to Hawknest beach.

We listened to music and played dominos.

Had steak and egg scramble and muffins.

We went to Haulover South for the morning and a snorkel.

We stopped at Skinnys for some shopping and drinks. I had a Bushwacker and chips to snack on.

Stopped at Maho for a swim

We had supper from Carribean Oasis located down below lunazul. We all had pecan chicken that is to die for and sides of coleslaw, mashed potatoes.

Started off with some light sprinkles and end up with a beautiful day on trunk bay.

We stayed at the beach all day. We all four had been floating and talking in water. We all were leaving the water at the same time and boom we got hit With a big wave and all of us did a somersault in the water and came up laughing. We gave the whole beach their laugh of the day!

We had little hamburgers and smashed potatoes. Jim and I stayed up and watched Bird Box movie.

Today we took Doug and Michele to a new beach they had not been to. Little Lameshure. We were the only ones on the beach for a while. the road down is pretty challenging. They loved this remote beach and definitely get St John if they love it here. They snorkeled and then we headed to Miss Lucy for a late lunch.

Miss Lucy's and Ruben grouper sandwich.IMG_1928.JPG
My favorite on the island.

To full for supper since we had late lunch. Just had cheese and crackers and sausage while played dominos.

Dennis Bay was our first stop of the day

We left for one last snorkel at Maho.

We stopped at Carribean Oasis to get some mashed potatoes to go with our turkey for supper and had a couple rounds of drinks at bar.

Had best Turkey dinner for last meal at Lunazul. Don't laugh but I brought a small turkey breast and we roasted it in the oven. It was so good.

day to leave Lunazul and transfer to Angelroost for two more weeks.

We went into town and it started raining. Went to Mongoose junction for a little shopping and stopped in at new tap room for a drink and some cheese curds.

We took Doug and Michele to catch 1 pm ferry, We enjoyed sharing the week with them. Loved that Michele was able to enjoy and savor the quietness and beauty of the island. She says in her words a place where her soul rests and her heart beats at a slower pace.

Until next year my friends

We went back to Angelroost and unpacked and talked to owners Larry and Jane Brown.
We took it easy and had little sausages and crescent rolls and watched the playoffs.

Woke up to a very sunny day and had blueberry pancakes. We left at 0930 and parked by road to enter long swim to pelican rock. Good snorkel and very calm

We went to Haulover South and did a snorkel clear around to lime cove.

Went To RhumblinesIMG_1855.JPG

for happy hour 5-6 half off pu pu menu and drinks. Drinks were good. Service has some bugs to work out. Took a long time to get drinks. Ordered food and ours came out and people next to us waited an hour and they had ordered before us. We all enjoyed talking to the people around us. One couple we had met at the beach she is also a nurse Chris and husband Tim from Massachusett they come every Jan. Another younger couple is down working on a house they bought. It used to be Leslie and Steve's rental before Hurricane. They hope to rent next year and come to visit when they can. They have 5 children. The bartender gave us all 6 a round of drinks because service was so slow. We enjoyed our evening in spite of the service.

To Hawknest and was beautiful there. We picked some shade and about an hour later a couple came and sat right in front of us. Not the view we wanted so we went to Dennis Bay and read. No snorkeling today

Today we had Lap of St John scheduled with Busy Bee. Went to the office across from Skinny's to meet and the other couple had canceled due to sickness. We offered to come another day and Bryan the owner said no today is a perfect weather day and we were off. His wife Marguerite are expecting a baby in June. She walked us to the pier so we could get on Busy Bee. First stop was Bee Hive. We had snorkeled here but not clear out to point. Enjoyed this snorkel a lot.

Second snorkel was ove by St James Christmas Cove we snorkeled around cay and then went for pizza at pizzia pi.

We had 1/2 Indiana sweet home and another half Dali Lane. So good Bryan called our order in and when we pulled up it was ready. How cool is that getting fresh pizza on the ocean!!!! Really good!

The third snorkel was Whistling Cay someplace I have always wanted to snorkel. Water was a little choppy

We went in Cruz Bay to get some gas

The 4th snorkel was round bay at the end of the long bay. Not too much to see except an Octopus

St John 2018 post hurricanes

Unexpected March trip

We came home from Roatan the end of January INSTEAD OF ST JOHN. Life went on but something was missing. Jane who we rent from called and asked how our trip was and offered us a special deal. Flights were too expensive so we let the idea go. Two weeks later I checked and the rates had went down so wayla we are headed back to St John. I had been watching the pictures on forum daily but I warned my husband to be prepared for lots of changes.

We went to Chicago Sat night after our Guys and Dolls dance and stayed at Best Western in Des Plains for park sleep and fly, caught the 545 shuttle to O'hare, no direct flight so we flew to San Juan. by United. Used United Club at Chicago to wait and got continental breakfast. Arrived in San Juan and had Mexican snack of chips and salsa while waiting for Seaborn

20 minutes later we were landing in St Thomas. They took the luggage right off of plane and you got to take it and go. Went to the van taxi Line and boarded.

I sat next to a lady that would be one of many conversations with locals. Luckily her home on island was not damaged. She was co owner for two restaurants that were both damaged but open now for business. I told her the one in Cruz.Bay is my husbands favorite for pad Thai .We also go to the one in Coral Bay at least once each visit ,She handed me her calling card and said have dinner on me as she got out of the van ! We are so glad you are returning to visit the island .How generous is that! We were not expecting that,

Arrived in red hook and had time to grab a bushwacker drink first sip and we are in island mode

Made the 5o'clock ferry. When we got in our first look a the island in person post hurricanes. Lots of.blue tarps on roofs and visible damaged. Amazed how cleaned up Cruz Bay was. This little island has worked their tails off to whip it back in shape and ready for visitors.

Courtsey picked us up in new large van he said he got in March pre hurricane. His office was demolished so he is doing his business out of his van. We went to his lot where he is rebuilding. We have always had great experiences with Greg the owner. He gives 10% discount for return customers and 6% discount if we pay cash.

He told us that the looters stole three of his jeeps and set one on fire and destroyed it,He was so thankful for return visitors he was also lucky his home was not damaged. Stopped at grocery store and headed over to Coral Bay

Jane greeted us at Angel Roost an octagon house in Upper Carolina Coral Bay. It had very little damage, lost its gate to come down to our studio, a rail on upper deck Jane said every leaf from flowers was stripped clean. They had spent their 50th anniversary huddled together in their home during Maria. She said it was the worst night of their lives. She said we had better get going if we wanted to eat because restaurants were not open late on Sunday. W ended up at Skinny Legs for burgers and watched the ND girls win ending up in sweet sixteen

Monday March 19 Sunny winds E 5 good condition for Haulover North snorkel

Walking in was beautiful as the butterflies were everywhere. The trail was very clean and easy L.ot's of stag horn and pillar coral broken. We saw a nurse shark and turtle. We forgot to charge camera batteries so no pictures. We sat at Haulover South had some shade there.

Drove to East End

The good and the bad. We drove the North shore. Gut wrenching seeing all the damage and widespread loss of home yet you look out to water and see new and better views. Driving to Annaberg ruins was tough all the mangroves and canopy of trees stripped and barren.

We walked the ruins and enjoyed the expanded view

Tuesday I always enjoy the early mornings pre sunrise with cup of coffee watching and listening to island wake up

Went to Francis and first on beach at 0850 we had bought Neso tent for sun protection: Easy to put up We snorkeled to right saw two large turtles and two small rays. We left at 330. We had met a couple a few years ago that was here now. We met for supper at indigo Grill. We both had a mango monito and Jim had jambalaya and I had mango fish taco. We had the same her waitress we had last night at skinny legs. Had great conversation with her about the hurricanes and experience after. She schooled us in differences of native She was born here and what a local was! g

We decided to take it easy today. Larry and Jane the owners came down to visit, the eighth 11 times we have rented from them. We got to Denis at 1030it is easy trail down, Tried to use Naso tent for shade but gust of wind would knock it down. It was sad to see all the palm trees down and all coral broken and on shore: Found shade down to right and enjoyed beautiful views out to water: Stayed till 430 and went back to house and had cheese and salami and cocktails on deck. Life is good

Rained a little during the night . They have had very little rain the last few weeks. Beautiful rainbow with breakfast:

Had blueberry pancakes. We went to Trunk Bay, The guard was in the booth but there was no charge. He just wanted to make sure you were not carrying glass 100$ fine. Set up tent and walked the beach which seams larger since hurricane. Restrooms were openand a booth was open selling rental chairs, snorkels even new whole face mask to rent . It was not that windy buta gust would knock tent over. Kept putting back up because no shade to be found, I snorkeled the the trail and actually it was pretty good. Even some stag horn corral survived. We went on a non cruise day and beach was not crowded.

Aqua bistro just opened this week. We had onion rings for app that were good. I had lime and coconut drink and Jim put arm on the table that was unlevel and all the drinks spilled on him what a mess. We changed tables while the cleaned up mess and got a new drinks.

Had crunchy grouper sandwich and pasta salad. Jim had fish tacos. We talked to owners of house Above Lunazul Ted and his wife from St Luis down working on house had windows blown out and porches damaged. Such good spirit with everything they had been through.

Up and went to Brown bay and wore knee brace and splints. Remoteness is back! The views were different than previous trips. Vast open views. open climbing up. Someone said not to go to Brown Bay that was full of garbage that had floated up. I was braced to see liter all over and when we came into the open the beach was clean. Thanks to all that cleared the trails and beaches. I picked up some stuff on side and put by trash for pck up
Beach is not know for beauty but it was quiet and tranquil and we found some shade. A lounge chair must of floated up and provided a resting place in the shade

Haulover North,

No wind so headed to Haulover north again awesome snorkel. Went the farthest out we have been and large reef we had not seen before. went to third telephone past rocks that jut out.

Miss Lucy for lunch their hours are noon-4 for now. Candy the cooks daughter was the waitress and we sat underneath the large umbrella that had been donated. Got so excited when saw on the menu that Grouper Ruben is back on menu my favorite sandwich on island.

Never saw this sign before after Saltpond

Went to Grootpan Bay after lunch. It was very hot here. I snorkeled to right what was churned up so did not see much. Tent would not stay up.My review of tent is not worth it gusts of wind bring it down. Today was the last day we tried to use it.

Tonight we went to Rumblines used what owner had given us for six piece pupu platter and drinks. Jim had pad thi. The waitress Katie was excellent and enjoyed her service. Talked to father and son who worked for BBC putting up power poles. They had been here since October and plan to be here till end of year. Son has fell in love with island and hopes to come back sometime and enjoy it when not working.

We Started out late and went to Waterlemon. We had heard from our friends that the snorkel at three mooring balls was not much there any longer. Walked whole way by shore now to big black rock. Very sad to say there was little to see around the cay. Also the snorkel on right to point all the coral was gone. Can not imagine how strong hurricane was to do so much damage above and below water. The beaches are bigger. There is good with the bad. We went to watch where the fishermen fly fish and found shade. We went and got our chairs and had wonderful quiet afternoon reading and staring at beautiful view.

Area where they fly fish

Awarak tandem kayak adventure. We were able to park at Mongoose parking lot at customer parking for day. We went to North shore deli to get sandwiches and Crack Bar. put in zip locks bags and in cooler. Checked in at office and then she walked us to Cruz Bay where they have Kayaks. She gave us the low down and safety instructions. There were foot rest and knee pads to help steer and roater in back.

First need to tell you our kayaking history is we have done two ocean tours one out to Henley Cay and one from Haulover South to point with two snorkel stops pelican rock and further out. #rd starting at Henson and going to Hurricane hole to snorkel mangroves. All of these had guides. We have come to conclusion we are not good at docking tandem kayak. Singles would of been easier. my husband seemed to think I did not paddle as much as he did. Go figure.

We started out and goal was to snorkel Caneel beaches since you can only get there by water.

The water was fairly calm wind at 8 knots. We made it over to turtle bay and hoped to make it to Hawksnest. The seas got much rougher so we decided the farthest we would go was Turtle beach. We started to go in and the beach was kinda uphill we got kayak front on beach husband got out and my foot got stuck on peddle and kayak started getting pummeled by water and sand. I finally got out and we both were holding on to kayak trying to keep it from sinking. We frantically pumped water out and finally got it on shore. We had to scoop sand out and decided to eat our lunch there. Thank goodness for zip lock bags our sandwiches stayed dry. We relaxed on the beautiful beach.

Tuesday Salt Pond

Arrived first in parking lot down at 0900. The butterflies lead us down the trail. We found some shade and set up camp. First up hike first part is all along shore now and is hard for me because I have arthritic ankles and bum knee. My husband did not want me to do this. I wore ankle splints and knee brace and off we went. Actually the beginning part was harder for me because of loose rocks but found the rest to be easier.I was so happy I was still able to do hike another year.Leaving Salt Pond it sprinkled and made it much easier walking out being cooled off by rain drops.

Blue cobblestone

Story of the painted rocks, pirate and lady bug. My grandchildren live in Valpo Indiana. They have a great club who paints rocks and hides in parks for kids to find. They though it would be great if Grandpa and Grandpa hid some in St John. We left them in Drunk Bay. Hope someone finds and enjoys them or re hides them.

Wed last day

Denis Bay

We had not been up to Peace hill in years. Just do it the 360 view is awesome. Not hard to climb up there.

MY daughter got my husband a hammock for Christmas. We did not try it till the last day .BIG mistake we loved it.

DONKEYS just will end with them

Until next year We can not wait to return. So glad we came. Still our favorite place!

St John 2017 Part 1

St John 2017

This is our tenth trip to St John. We usually spend the night in Chicago and leave our car but we were cringing at the price to leave our car for 3 weeks. So our youngest son said he would take us and pick us up. What a treat! We left home at 5:30 am and arrived about 7:30 am in Chicago. We had a direct flight to St Thomas with United. We a had a little bit of time to waste so we went to the United lounge for breakfast and to wait for our 9:50 flight. Our flight took off on time. We arrived in St Thomas at 3:30. We took a taxi from the airport to Red Hook and caught the 5 pm ferry to Cruz Bay, St John.

The weather for the two weeks we were on the rock was the best we have ever had. It rained only twice during the day those two weeks. The first time was while we were unloading our suitcases at Angel Roost and the second time about a half hour the day before we left. The winds were strong the first five days but snorkeling on the south side was smooth and very clear. The rest of trip the winds were light and great snorkeling.

We rented our Jeep from Courtesy and purchased some groceries at Starfish market and headed over to Coral Bay to our home away from home for two weeks, Angels Roost. Arrived and was talking to home owners Larry and Jane when had a cloud burst of liquid sunshine. Off to eat at Aqua Bistro for our favorite crunchy grouper and a Lime in a Coconut drink.

Sunday Jan 15th Sunny

Up early, drinking coffee, and watching the sun come up. One of my favorite times of the day. Had bacon and egg mac-muffins for breakfast.

I let my husband pick the first beach and he picked Frances. We arrived at 0900. We snorkeled to left and saw some squid and a small shark. Our old faithful underwater camera, DC 10 died. We saw some bubbles go up and that was all. We were disappointed it being our first day and all. The disappointment disappeared as fast as it came after just taking in everything that the beach and seas have to offer, Enjoyed the beach and stayed till 3 pm.

Driving home stopped at overlook

We had Steak and potatoes on the grill.

We are huge Packer fans and watched the Packers win over Dallas 31-28. What a game. GO PACK GO.

Monday Sunny winds 18

We went to Little Lameshur after having blueberry pancakes for breakfast. The road has really gotten a lot worse since last year. The holes have gotten wider and deeper. Even gained a few more. The wash outs have become wider and deeper. We met a car on our way out. It did not adventure very far. The car turned around after the first encounter with the washouts and holes.

We sat up our chairs on the far left. We snorkeled on the left and at rocks in middle. Did not see anything unusual. Read and walked to the ruins.

We went to beach bum and bought a go pro 5 the only water camera they had. We did not want to waste time going to St Thomas so Go Pro it was Only problem was all the directions were in Spanish. The girl at beach bum helped us set it up.

We had met a couple from Minnesota a few years ago that were on the island again. They had just spent 10 days on Virgin Gorda. Virgin Gorda is our destination for week three. We met them for supper at Indigo Grill. We all had fish tacos that were amazing. I had a mango mojito that was also pretty tasty. We had a nice discussion about Virgin Gorda.

Tuesday 17th Sunny winds 17ENE

Went to Grootpan and snorkeled to left middle and to right a short distance.

Today, at Grootpan, is one of the days when something happened I will always remember. We were sitting on beach reading when out of corner of our eyes we see a older gentleman, Peter, walking on the very rocky beach with a cane. It took him forever to reach the beach. He stopped, put his cane in the rocks, hung his shirt on it, put his snorkel and mask on, and scooted down the hill to the water. He floated and snorkeled and the expression on his face was priceless. While he was in the water his joints moved freely with no effort. Getting out was a whole another adventure . We wanted to give him his dignity but getting up was just too hard for him. My husband went down to give him a hand to help him stand on rocky beach and make it up the hill. We talked to him and found out Peter had built a home near here in the mid 90's and had sold it last year. He was back staying for 10 days. Seeing him trying to enjoy the simple things of the past warmed my heart in so many ways. I hope someone is there for me to help me along the rocky paths of life.

Tonight we had honey pecan chicken from Caribbean oasis

We had planned on snorkeling with reef to peak

.We asked to have Steve as our guide. I do not know him except have followed his trip reports of island for years as Augie on virgin island forum,. before he moved here with his lovely wife Leslie. We met Steve at Hansen bay.We had a double Kayak We went to a hidden reef past pelican point snorkeled for over a hour and half at otter inlet. Great snorkel our camera battery died before we got very many pictures. We saw a star fish, lionfish, school of angelfish, puffer fish

We got done at 2 pm We had pork loin and pasta for supper

Thursday 19th Winds 7E and sunny

Finally the winds are dying down and it was a perfect snorkel for Haulover North. Very clear water with large schools of fish.

Got to Miss Lucy at 1120. We got the table by the water for the first time.

Grouper Ruben and homemade fries. AWESOME

Friday Jan 20 Jan My 60th birthday Sunny wind 1 E

We snorkeled the three mooring balls going into Leinster Bay.

I have been lucky enough to celebrate my birthday on St John the last 9 years. We ate the first six years at ZoZo's in their old place and once at the restaurant at Caneel. We always loved our meal but the last time I decided I wanted to try something different the next year. For two years, we ate at Asolaire, the view there is to die for, the food is just OK.

This year we went back to Zozo's

My husband had asked for a table by the rail

We shared the Calamari for a appetizer

I had a wonderful Watermelon salad, watermelon, pineapple, cucumber arugula salad, riccotta salata with fresh basil and vanilla vinaigrette, My mouth still waters when I think of it.

I chose a appetizer portion of fresh Pappardelle wild mushrooms, shaved pecorino and white truffle sauce

Jim had artic chard that he loved

We shared a Carmel molten cake

Turning 60 was not so bad

We went to Salt Pond 0830 and did our annual hike to Rams Head. We took our time and enjoyed the views.

It was a sunny day we ate lunch and snorkeled the rocks in the middle. It was very calm, saw an octopus in deep water, and an green spotted eel coming back in. The photo does not do it justice it was a vibrant green and blue.

It clouded up in afternoon, We stayed till about 3 o'clock. Supper was hamburger on the grill and Jim went and got a to go order of onion rings from Aqua Bistro.

Sunday 22 winds N 8 m/hr Sunny

We did the Waterlemon snorkel around the cay, I always love this snorkel my husband not so much. There was a fair amount of current but he said he was ok and it seemed to push us around the good side to fast. We should of snorkeled it a second time. We saw our first lobster on the sandy area.

You could not park at the gate and the spot we had used earlier in the week was taken. My husband dropped me off and parked up at Dennis Bay and walked down. We went to Oppenheimer beach for lunch and afternoon siesta. Surf was up.

Had sausage and potatoes on the grill. Watched Atlanta beat our Packers.

Monday we hiked a half hour to tet to Brown Bay, We got there at 0900 and snorkeled for a hour to the left. It was very calm and we were able to get around the point. It was my favorite snorkel yet.

left and got last spot at Maho we stayed until 330. Had small turkey breast on grill and garlic mashed potatoes for supper,

Tues 24th

St John Part 2

St John 2 weeks Virgin Gorda1 week

Wed Sunny

We went to Great Lameshur to snorkel. Water was calm there were no waves but the water was all churned up and the visibility very poor.

We dried off and went to Miss Lucy's for lunch

Jim loves mangroves so I decided to give Princess snorkel another try. The water is shallow and you do not wear fins. Last time I jumped on his back because it freaked me out. Still did not love but I gave it another try. Of course the outer areas in deeper water are better but it is easy access

from shore at Princess.

Had pig in blankets and pasta and green beans for supper

Thursday Caneel

and walked to Honeymoon beach and left our chairs and cooler.

We hiked to Salomon and when we arrived at 0900 only one other girl on beach. We talked to her and she was traveling alone with out a jeep. She had done alot in 4 days and even went to salt pond by bus. She certainly did a lot and it was interesting to hear how others travel. She was kind enough to take our picture of the two of us. We are not very good as selfies.

We stayed till 1230 and hiked back to Honeymoon. The beach had been invaded and was packed. We ate our lunch and then went to
Caneel to snorkel from Caneel beach to Scott

Had pork loin on grill and sides leftover in fridge.

Friday our last day before going to Virgin Gorda we traditionally pick our favorite beach to veg out on, Denis Bay won and what a difference a few days. The surf was up and waves were crashing and made for a really relaxing day.

When leaving St John I feel so much better when I know I am already booked for next Jan. One week at Lunazul and two weeks at Angels Roost.

Goodby Angel Roost until next year

Sat Jan 12 Sunny

We went to Salt pond which is conveniently located about 4 miles from Coral Bay. It is a great calm beach if the surf is breaking on the North shore. It is about a 1/4th a mile to beach. We usually spend the whole day here. You can walk over to Drunk Bay which is excellent beach for beach combing or making a rock person. This beach is too rough and dangerous for swimming. The Rams head trail is about a mile long and a must do hike. Blue cobblestone beach is there and a great snorkel. If it is sunny I love to lay on rocks at blue cobblestone and listen to water rumbling over rocks. If you do the Rams head hike take plenty of water for it is pretty much out in the open.

We arrived at 0915 and was the first on the beach. Tortola and St John 2009

First of all I need to tell you how this trip came about. Last year on our cruise we met a couple who owned a home on Tortola. When our cruise stopped at Tortola port they showed us the island and offered to let us rent in future. We took them up on offer and booked for the following year.

Tuesday Jam 6th

We got up and left home at 430 we drove to my son's house and left our car. My son dove us to Chicago. We made our 0830 flight and had to wait in line to be de iced. We were flying in the air about a hour when the pilot came over the speaker and said we are going to have to land in New York due to engine light problem. We landed safely and the whole runway was lined with emergency vehicles with their lights on. I guess the problem was more serious than we knew. We had to wait about 3 hours for a new plane. We arrived in San Juan at 7pm and had to wait until 1030 for plane to St Thomas.
Ron Lochardt the owner of Chrystel palace had been following our delay picked us up at airport. What great service picking up his customers. We got to bed and breakfast and had a drink at the honor bar. We were very tired due to long travel day but very happy to be in St Thomas.

Wed Jan 7th

Up for sunrise at 0630 and went out on large deck to watch sunrise and cruise ships come in. We walked down to shore and walked for about a hour. We went back to Chrystal Palace and had coffee, fruit, cereal and a roll. We went back into town to shop.

We left on 1245 speedy ferry to Tortola. Arrived in hour and went through customs. We were supposed to be picked up by Albert their driver and Iris housekeeper. We waited about 45 min and they showed up to take us to get our rental. We payed 50 a day plus 15 for collision insurance. We later found out our insurance covers us we just have to show proof of insurance. Live and learn. We ate at Pursers and I had Maui Maui sandwich and Jim had Cod fried fish. We got our first lesson in island time. There were hardly any customers but they made us wait forever for bill

Showing St John to our Daughter

Jan 8th

Snow, Snow, Snow, It was snowing so hard. My husband came home and said we are getting out of here tonight. We drove a hour to catch United Lemo bus in Michigan City. They had received about a foot of snow. We got our suitcases loaded and a punk rock girl with so many earrings I could not count got on the bus as the driver!! What??? It was snowing so hard you could not see, As we got ready to go up ramp to interstate I litterly had to close my eyes. This young girl did not act like she knew how to drive in this type of weather. We loved Sailview but liked that Angels Roost was larger and had washer and dryer and kitchen. A week before our trip we had heard on the news where a mother and daughter was trampled in Africa while living there. Jane called us and said it was their daughter in law and grand daughter were the ones killed and they would be going home to New York for the funeral. They made it available for Angel Roost to be opened up and ready for us.

Tuesday Jan 21. We did the Brown Bay Snorkel. Took us 35 min to get there and 35 to get back. Water was rough but clear visibility. We have snorkeled to far left the last couple years. Have snorkeled to far right fans and stronger current.

Pretty much a tradition to eat at Vies when out this way, She is closed on Sun & Mondays. I always get garlic chicken with johnny cake and Jim gets rice and beans. I like her homemade tea. We sat with a two couples who live on a boat in Coral bay for 4 months each year.

Vie charges 2 dollars a piece for people to use her beach I walked down to check it out. Several people like to snorkel here. It was my least favorite snorkel of trip.

Overlook towards Tortola

We drove to Privateer beach on far East End beautiful and tranquil but too rough to snorkel.

Wed 22 Sunny up and arrived at Caneel. Snorkeled to far right and saw the most fish we have ever seen on point. Got out and rested on Scott and then snorkeled far right. You have to be careful here because of strong current. I put my shoes on my vest so when we got done we could walk out instead of snorkeling clear around again. We each had a drink at bar Mango dream to validate parking ticket. We left to go vegetate on Gibney for the afternoon.

Thursday Jan 23rd We went to Haulover North a little rough so not as clear snorkeling as in the past.We ate lunch at Miss Lucy's and went back to Maho to far right. Tonight we ate in had steak, potatoes in foil and pasta. At home had bad snowstorm and there was a 15 car and 15 Semi pile up in Michigan City.

Friday Jan 24th our last day. It started out sunny and we went to Jumbie. Tried to snorkel here but was way to choppy. Headed to Jim's favorite beach Dennis. This would not be the last afternoon we would want we dogged rain for two hours then went back to Angels Roost to get ready for supper. We had reservations for 630 at Miss Lucy's. We chose to eat outside and enjoy the view. She brought out some candles for the no seeums. Jim had seafood patella and I had spinage salad, bread and cheese.

Saturday is return home day. We got up at 0600 left at 0900 to return jeep. Left suitcases with Curtesey and went shopping. Ate lunch at Ocean and got sandwiches for plane from Deli Grotto. Caught the 1300 ferry for 430 flight. Arrived 0930 got car and hoped we would make it home because roads were bad. We made it to one mile from our house and got stuck. Luckly Jim had packed a shovel and he tried to get us out. I could do nothing right in his eyes trying to rock the car. TENSION was tight! we made it back to his sisters and would be stuck there till a plow went through the next day at noon.

St John 2015

Best snorkeling conditions EVER

This would be our 8th trip to St John. Would we grow tired of our favorite place? The answer would be a resounding no, This would be our best trip yet. I never get tired of all the shades of blue green water. My heart still beats faster as I get a view of the beaches and water of the North Shore .My addiction still remains.

Our trip started off rough. You know when you want to get out of Dodge and the weather is trying to keep you from going. Our road had been drifted shut on Thursday night with neighbors getting stuck before getting home for the night. On Friday after the plow went through Jim headed to work to wrap up everything so we could be on our way. We started out and our road was drifting again. The local highway was a mess and visibility was bad. They were diverting semi trucks from the interstate do to accidents closing down roads. We were 45 min out when I asked Jim if he had socks to wear with his sandals? He got this sick look on his face. He had forgotten is clothes, Zip off pants and shirt to wear to St John hanging up in our laundry room. The only warm things he had. We tuned around and braved the bad roads again to get his clothes. A hour and half later we were back on track. We stopped over in Valpo to see our grandsons before leaving. They hardly had any snow there. The lake effect snow is so crazy. We had a nice visit and were on our way to spend night in Chicago,

We stopped and ate at Applebees and made it to Park Sleep and Fly hotel in Chicago. When checking in they could not find our parking reservation. We had stayed here the last 3 years. We got a manager and finally they found the transaction. Note to self print copy when making reservations . Jim was asleep as soon as head hit the pillow. We were up and caught the 0600 shuttle to airport.

Jan 10th travel day
We caught the 0600 shuttle to airport. We got lucky and both got pre checked so through lines in no time. So good not to take shoes off, computer out and remove liquids and all. We went to Chilli's for breakfast. We fly direct on United and have their credit card with few perks, free checked luggage and we had a free pass for private lounge. We did not eat there but enjoyed the cappuccino, paper and free wi fi,,Flight was uneventful.

Love when first get off plane and warm breeze hits your face. Aww we are here. Slow down, enjoy. First stop shot of free Cruzan RumIMG_0319.jpgIMG_0318.jpg90_IMG_0322.jpg

We got our jeep from Curtsey got a new blue two door with 1200 miles. Stopped at Dolphin Market for few groceries and was home at Angels Roost.IMG_0613.jpg90_IMG_0408.jpgIMG_0619.jpg Supper was at Aqua Bistro for our usual first meal of trip crunchy grouper sandwich.

Sunday Jan 11th

We are early risers and usually eat in for breakfast. We had eggs, toast and bacon, We normally leave around 0830 for the beach. First beach Frances for the day. Love, love, love getting to the beach when it is deserted. This year we found more early risers. We picked out our space and began to decompress

We snorkeled to the right but it was not a good snorkel very murky and poor visibility. We left the beach at 2pm to watch Packers in playoffs. I had a turkey breast I thought I had brought from home. When I started to make supper saw Jim had grabbed a whole chicken instead. No problem I put olive oil and salt and pepper and Jim grilled it along with potatoes in foil. It turned out delicious.Packers beat Dallas.

Monday Jan 12

We went to a beach we have not been to for a while. Jumbie. Had a couple pop up showers that lasted only a few minutes. Had the beach to ourselves for 2 hours. Read and enjoyed the crashing waves.During a potty break found this beautiful huge blue crab.

When people started to arrive at beach around 11 we decided to stop off at Gibney.

Tonight we thought we would try out the new restaurant Indigo Grill but it was closed till it had some inspections. We went to Shipwreck
IMG_0368.jpg, it was about 0630 so we did not have reservations. There were about 5 tables already seated. It cracks me up when hostess says oh you don't have reservations--------let me see what we can do. She goes and talks to someone and seats us on left side where you get seated if you don't have reservations, We laughed with a couple other groups who did not have reservations went through same process got seated on each side of us. Met a great couple from Minnesota who we would run across later on week. I am such a talker and take pity on anyone who gets seated by me. I pretty much can strike up a conversation with anyone.
My husband had fish and chips and I had a salad and mussels and order of bread. It was my least favorite meal of trip. My husband said his was ok

Tuesday Jan 13th

Kiddle was our destination for the morning with the first good snorkel of trip. Finally water was clear and calm. Able to snorkel quite a way to right. Saw octopus but he hid right away. Met a couple from Michigan who do a lot of hiking. We would see them a few more times on trip and take their suggestions to try Elk bay and snorkel Waterlemon to right out around point. I thing it is invaluable the information you learn from seasoned travelers.

Arrived a little later than we wanted at 1215 and there were about 5 table 's seated already .We ordered and was pleasantly surprised to be out of there in under a hour. The view is to die for put you must be willing to wait. it usually takes about 10 min per table before your food comes out. This is one of our favorites and in my opinion worth the wait. We split the grouper Ruben and ordered an extra order of homemade fries served with remoulade sauce.

Maho was our beach for afternoon

Wed Jan 14th

Haulover North There was hardly any breeze and it looked calm enough to get in although there was a large amount of sargassum on the shore

I always enjoy Haulover South It is always calm here

Took a drive up Dreekets Bay I love the view from up there

Driving back to Coral Bay we came across the newest donkey I think someone said they were calling Pumpkin

Tonight we went to Lime Inn for all you can eat shrimp and I had grilled lobster! Rick the owner always remembers repeat customers and makes sure you are happy.

Thursday 15th.

Today Dorothy a friend we had met 8 years ago when we did a Princess Tahiti Cruise was coming to see us from St Thomas. She lives in Mississauga Canada, She is our same age. We have not seen her for two years. She is one of those people who is easy to get along and enjoys snorkeling and the water,;She was on a cruise for two weeks and was porting in St Thomas. The ship got in late so she came on the1000 ferry. We got some sandwiches at Sam and Jacks and went to Frank Bay. Met a lady who was picking up sea glass. She was kind enough to take our picture.

We picked her up about 1030 and decided to show her Caneel and Honeymoon beach. We parked and walked to Honeymoon.Caught up with each other and Dorthy and I snorkeled to the left. I was surprised that the coral was in pretty good shape here. It drives me CRAZY with all the excursion
snorkelers who do not respect the coral and stand on it. We relaxed and went to Caneels main beach and snorkeled to the right around the point. We only got one picture but sure enjoyed her visit. She bought us a drink at the bar and we validated our parking ticket. She bought us a bottle of ice wine to enjoy later. I had worried about forecast because it projected 40% rain. I am glad that the weather forecasters are as accurate as ours are at home. It was a sunny day with no rain in sight.

Friday Jan 16th

Hiked to Brown Bay lots of Sargassum along shore. It was calm and clear once we got out to left towards point.

We went back to Maho for afternoonand finished up chicken salad on sandwich

We had reservations at 6 pm for Virgin Fire. We were most excited because Inner visons are playing on Fridays. It would be our first time hearing them. We got a seat at the rail on the balcony. I had french fry appetizer and taco appetizer for entree. Jim had jambalaya.
We enjoyed our evening.

Saturday is turn around day for a lot of vacationers. As we had been by Salt Pond earlier in week we noticed how busy the parking lot had been. Jim hoped maybe it would be less busy on turnaround day. Good choice lot less people today. The weather was Sunny, hot with no breeze. We arrived at 0900 and picked out our spot. The water was up and less beach than normal. We started the hike to Rams head. Most of the time once you reach the top you need to hold on to your hat. Not today No breeze we still spent about a 1/2 hour at the top soaking in the 360 degree view. Met some great people and took pictures of each other. One couple from NY was visiting with their parents. In conversation shared our love for Coral Bay and the villa they had rented before Lunazul. We would later book Lunazul for our second week next Jan.I took a small tumble coming down and was lucky just to have cuts and not a sprained ankle,

Very calm snorkel to left got clear around towards Blue Cobblestone

We stopped at tourist trap and had Boom Booms's So good on a hot day. Talked to table next to us who happened to be Jane and Larry's neighbor in upper Carolina. Her husband is author of October Sky and many other books.

Tonight we finally got to try Indigo Grill where Donkey Diner used to be. We met the co owner Allison who co owns with owners from Rumblines in Cruz Bay. What a transformation of the old Donkey Diner. Bar outside continues inside. Seating out or in. We chose outside and really enjoyed this place. Nice menu had sandwiches or nice dinner choices. Our waitress Cassie was the best server we had all vacation. I had Margaretta pizza and my husband had gourmet hamb on tater tots. Devilish!!

Sunday October 18th

Started in Haulover South and hiked rugged trail to right to Elks bay. What a surprise much bigger bay than we expected. Snorkeled to left and Jim found a pretty shell that had just died. Wow is it hard to get that smell out! This bay is really isolated and we saw no one the few hours we were there. I would like to come back and see if can find trail that gets you over to mangroves.

I wanted to snorkel Haulover North to the east towards point. We drove up Dreekets road and parked, There is a rough drive that goes down to beach. This would end up being my yuckiest snorkel ever do to the conditions. The Sargassum was built up on shore and as we stepped in sand by water, millions of bugs seemed to be hatching where we had stepped. The water was brown and snorkel did not get good until we got clear out by point. No pictures we could not wait to get out of water and get back to shower.

We are huge Packer fans and was excited to see Packers and Sea hawks in NFC championship. We were ahead by 12 with 5 min to go. They ended up tying the game and we lost in overtime. We were very sad but Hey we are in paradise we can not let a game get us down. Had pork loin on grill, corn and pasta.

Monday Jan 19th.

We got to trunk bay at 0800. It is suppose to open at 0730 but no one was there when we arrived and we were able to just walk in. We walked the beach for a mile and read for a while. The tide was up so less beach but still beautiful.

Left when Trunk started getting busy at 1000 and went to Dennis Bay

Rhumb lines for supper. Always a favorite. Had champagne mango mojitos. We had spring rolls and vegetable samosa.Pad Thai for both of us I have them lower the spice down for mine .Only able to eat few bites and I bloated up. It was so good but had to get to go for another meal later in the week.

Tuesday Jan 20th

58th birthday what a lucky girl to get to spend it here on the island I am truly blessed. We got to Leinster Bay around 0900. Walked down to bay and set up camp. Tide again was up and very little beach. We went back to three mooring balls and enjoyed the snorkel. Saw a huge ray. We went back to bay and read and had lunch. Instead of snorkeling the cay we took the advice of some people we had met and snorkeled to the far right out to the point. The water was very calm and very little current. This was a very interesting snorkel and really enjoyed it, even better than cay IMHO.

For Birthday supper had reservations at Asolare table at the rail for sunset
James was our waiter the only disappointment was our drinks. I had a lemongrass drink and Jim had a cosmo We should of sent them back but I am not a complainer. The food was good, I had Thai ribs with goat cheese polenta. Jim had very good sweet and sour chicken. We both shared almond cream brulee.

Wed Jan 21

We went to Great Lameshur and snorkeled all the way to Cabritte Horn Point. Saw turtles, stingrays, squid and a mean looking barracuda. The rock formations were amazing. Snorkeled for about 2 1/2 hours when we got done my legs were like jelly.

Miss Lucy 's for lunch The pet goat Molinda got loose and came to visit Jim

Gibney was the beach for afternoon. James our waiter showed up with friends and was kind enough to ask how my birthday turned out.

Thursday Jan 22

We got to Caneel at 0900. Left our chairs and cooler on Honeymoon beach. Hiked to Salomon, There was a photo shoot of mermaid being done by Steve Simonsen. I have always admired this local photographer and enjoyed watching him work. I talked to his wife for a while. She said they met 30 years ago on St Thomas. I asked the mermaid if she minded if I took her photograph. Here are my amateur photos with i phone.

We went to Honeymoon to eat our lunch and only stayed a hour beach was CRAZY busy.

Snorkel at Caneel beach to Scott Bay

Jackie our favorite bartender was serving up our favorite drinks

Friday Jan 23

We stopped at Maho just for some photo's with the beach empty

Hawksnest beach always get early sun and the parking lot was empty so we stopped. So I am not anti social but how do you feel when have whole empty beach and someone sets up camp 2 feet from you???? We get there early to enjoy peace and quite. I guess we had picked the best spot because after 2 hours of quiet bliss 2 caffeine charged women broke our trance. Time to move on!!

Last day favorite beach here we come

Just as the name imply' s peace is what I feel here. Normally we do not snorkel on our last day but it was so calm we just had to get in the water

Last night we have reservations at Aqua Bistro if you are coming here on Friday night you have to have reservations or you will wait a long time.

Saturday Jan 24th
